The Poetry of Reality with Richard Dawkins
The Poetry of Reality is the long-form podcast and YouTube series hosted by evolutionary biologist and author Richard Dawkins. From 2024 to 2026, I developed its title and thumbnail strategy, together with the visual direction used to present conversations on evolution, religion and reason.
The Challenge
An episode may spend an hour developing an argument; the viewer decides whether to begin it from a title and thumbnail. The task was to compress without distorting: identify the strongest proposition in the conversation, express it in a few words and ensure the episode could honour the promise.
Established followers already understood Dawkins’s references. First-time viewers did not, while sceptical viewers often arrived through disagreement. The same title and thumbnail needed to offer each of them a credible point of entry.
While accuracy set the limit, provocation was useful only when it arose from the argument itself. A title that promised a claim or confrontation the episode did not contain would weaken the trust on which the channel depended.
The Solution
For each episode, I developed several complete title-and-thumbnail packages rather than treating the two elements separately. Each pair approached the conversation from a different angle and was tested as a unit. The title carried the central argument or question; the thumbnail introduced the tension that made it immediate.
For an episode on apparent design flaws in nature, three packages were developed: How imperfections are proof of evolution with Nature’s Mistakes; A designer would never build this with Nature’s Design Fails; and If God designed it, why is it so badly built? with God Messed Up? The third pair outperformed the alternatives and was published. It has since passed 271,000 views.
The process did not impose one formula on every episode. A direct rebuttal could support Richard Dawkins DESTROYS Creationist Arguments with THAT’S PATHETIC…, while an explanatory episode could lead with The greatest idea anyone ever had and HOW LIFE REALLY WORKS. The tone followed the material; the relationship between title and thumbnail remained consistent.
The design direction followed the same principle. Each thumbnail used a single focal image, a short line with an immediate reading order and enough contrast to remain clear at feed size.
Result: Since Season 2 launched, the channel’s new releases have accumulated more than 3.6 million views. Twelve have passed 100,000, led by Richard Dawkins DESTROYS Creationist Arguments at 1 million.
